Make sure you do this before the year ends 💖

Hey friend,

We are so close to the Holidays, and I hope you have taken some time off. You deserve this. This brings me to my newsletter topic for today.

Book some self-care time for yourself

If you are a manager or aspiring leader, you might think your time stinks a bit right now. 😅

  • Performance reviews,
  • Q1 2023 planning,
  • Understanding Vision and Org goals for next year,
  • Budgeting,
  • Promotions and Raises
  • Difficult Conversations and Feedback
  • maybe even Layoffs and navigating around that

It can take an emotional toll to do all this in parallel. Holidays can be stressful for this reason. I've seen that the number 1 thing managers (especially new ones) ignore is self-care.

We tend to focus on our team, org and everything else over our mental health. This is fair, as these are some of the expectations from a leader. But making a plan for yourself will make you feel much better.

Here are some ideas I'd recommend 💖

  • Book a spa day
  • Use that year-end budget and book a workshop/class for Q1
  • Book a day off
  • Plan a family vacation/friend vacation
  • Book a therapy session if you need one
  • Get some sunlight and go for a walk with a loved one

Whatever self-care activity makes you feel better, plan for that.

A Year is split into 4 quarters: Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. Q1 is Quarter 1, Q2 is quarter 2 and so on.

If you are comfortable with this, I recommend sharing your favourite self-care activity with the team. This will be a good reminder for them to do the same.

🧰 The Engineering Leader's Toolbox

  • Notion: All the templates I've shared and my course planning document are done in Notion. I can't recommend this tool enough.
